Why Your Skin’s Being Dramatic Lately (Stress + Hormones Explained)

If your skin’s suddenly doing the acne-and-dryness combo, you’re not imagining it. It’s not “just you,” and it’s definitely not because you forgot to drink water once.

The short version: your skin’s reacting to life

When stress is up and hormones are shifting (hello, 40s/50s+), skin can get a bit… emotional.

  • Stress can crank up inflammation and oil for some people → hello surprise pimples

  • Hormone changes can mess with balance → dryness, sensitivity, and breakouts at the same time (rude)

  • Less sleep = slower skin repair → things hang around longer than they used to

Why am I getting acne at this age?

Because skin doesn’t read the rulebook. Adult acne is common, and it can pop up even in your 50s and beyond—especially when stress and hormones are doing their thing. The trick is not to treat it like teen acne (aka: stripping your skin and hoping for the best).

And the dryness?

If your skin feels tight after a shower, gets flaky, or suddenly stings when you apply products—yep, that’s dryness (and often a cranky skin barrier). And fun fact: over-cleansing and over-scrubbing can make both dryness and acne worse.

The “calm down” routine (not a 14-step situation)

Try this for 1–2 weeks and your skin usually stops carrying on:

  1. Stop nuking it
If you’re using harsh products, strong actives every day, or scrubbing like you’re removing paint—ease up.

  2. Scrub, but gently
Use your Chocolate or Coffee Scrub 1–2 times a week, light pressure, and avoid any angry/broken-out spots.

  3. Moisturise like you mean it
Dry skin needs consistency, not random panic-lotions.

  • Use your Moisturiser daily

  • Use your Body Butter after showering (especially on legs/arms)
Bonus: your Body Butter as shaving cream + balm is a game-changer for shaving irritation and dryness.

  1. Spot-treat, don’t carpet-bomb
If you’re getting the occasional pimple, focus on the spot—don’t dry out the entire area “just in case.”

Tiny life stuff that helps (without telling you to ‘just relax’)

  • Swap scorching showers for warm ones

  • Moisturise on slightly damp skin

  • Change pillowcases regularly

  • A 5-minute walk or earlier night when you can (not perfect, just better)

If your skin is really not having it

If you’re getting painful cystic breakouts, widespread irritation, or cracking/bleeding dryness, it’s worth checking in with your GP/derm.
