How to exfoliate without irritation (plus how often to do it)
1) Pick the right scrub for your skin
Sensitive/dry: finer grains, more oils/butters, gentle pressure
Normal/combination: medium grain, focus on rough areas
Oily/thicker skin: slightly more exfoliation, but still avoid “scrubbing hard”
2) Exfoliate on damp skin, not dry
In the shower, wet skin first, then apply scrub with light pressure in small circles.
3) Keep it short + gentle
Aim for 30–60 seconds per area (arms/legs), and avoid going over the same spot repeatedly.
4) Avoid irritated or freshly shaved skin
Skip exfoliating if you’re sunburned, rashy, broken out, or right after shaving/waxing (for many people, exfoliating the day before shaving feels best).
5) Rinse well and moisturise right away
Pat dry and apply lotion/body oil while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
How often should you exfoliate?
Sensitive skin: 1× per week
Dry skin: 1× per week (up to 2× if your skin tolerates it)
Normal/combination: 2× per week
Oily/thicker skin: 2–3× per week
Rule of thumb: if you feel stinging, tightness, or see redness that lingers, reduce frequency.
Quick “Do / Don’t” box
Do: gentle pressure, damp skin, moisturise after.
Don’t: scrub hard, exfoliate daily, or use on broken/irritated skin.
