Foods high in antioxidants are......

I love giving answers to questions like this! I'm a fruit addict! Most fruits, especially berries, are great for skin. "Eating antioxidants rich foods is always a great idea.

Antioxidants fight free radicals that attack and alter DNA leading to diseases (including cancer) and aging.

Here is a list of foods that contain antioxidants…if you want to dig deeper into the topic of the relation between skin and foods, I wrote an entire article on it [LINK]

  1. 🍇Black grapes contain resveratrol. Resveratrol modulates inflammation and fights oxidative stress through SIRT-1 activation. SIRT-1 is an enzyme that has been linked to DNA repair, oxidative stress response, mitochondrial function, and biogenesis. If you have to drink alcohol opt for a glass of red wine!
  2. 🌶 Red chili, citrus fruits, potatoes and berries contain vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen and is also one of the best anti oxidants in skincare. Even though berries are not the first food that comes to mind when we think of vitamin C, did you know that ounce for ounce strawberries actually provide more vitamin C than oranges? One more reason to love strawberries 🍓!
  3. ☕️ Coffee contains caffeine, an antioxidant that protects the skin against UV rays and slows down the photoaging of the skin. (However this does not mean you should drink coffee all the time, as we know caffeine is an excitant and abusing it is not good for our health.) In skincare it is especially great as an ingredient in eye creams.
  4. 🍅 Tomatoes contain ferulic acid, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from sun damage and free radicals. Free radicals are very unstable molecules with an appetite for electrons. They tend to steal electrons from whatever other molecule they can find, including the DNA, leading to changes in our bodies that are negative. In the skin they’re responsible for the aging process.
  5. 🍊 Citrus fruits contain Vitamin C, probably the most common antioxidant. Contrary to popular belief, high doses of vitamin C do not protect from viruses like the common cold. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant involved in the production of collagen.
  6. 🫒 Olive oil, beside making food taste delicious, is also rich in antioxidants called flavones. This is why is a staple in the Mediterranean diet. Experts are always debating on what are the healthiest foods, but everyone agrees on olive oil!
  7. 🍵 Green Tea, probably the best thing you can drink. Keeps you looking young thanks to the astounding number of antioxidants it contains.
  8. 🌰 Hazelnuts, wheat, sunflower oil/seeds, red caviar, egg yolks and almonds all contain vitamin E which is an antioxidant. In skincare it also has a soothing effects on skin thanks to the lipids and it helps skin retain moisture.
  9. 🧄 Garlic contains caffeic acid which prevents the degradation of pro-collagen type 1. Speaking of which…

Not an antioxidant, but still essential: bone broth, beef, chicken and fish contain collagen, a protein responsible for skin elasticity. Bone broth doesn’t come with just collagen but also with vitamins and minerals that the body needs.

If you don’t plan on eating foods that contain collagen you could always go for collagen supplements. I take my unflavoured collagen powder in my coffee or soups (or even with just water) every single day as I don’t want to eat meat all the time.

I hope this list was useful, I might add a few more points later!

Another great food that is great for skin, especially collagen, is avocado. Everyone loves a smashed avocado, with bacon for breakfast! Of course, you then wash it down with a few cups of green tea!
